Superior Producer wreck

One of our most popular trips is to the 50-meter long wreck of the Superior Producer, the best preserved wreck on Curaçao.

On September 30, 1977, the ship Superior Producer, built in 1957, was en route from St. Anna Bay to Isla Margarita (Venezuela), loaded with luxury goods such as whiskey, perfume, bags, jeans and other clothing. Upon departure from the port of Willemstad, the ship immediately ran into problems. The portholes were still open and the ship was overloaded and poorly loaded. Soon the ship began to sink. To prevent the ship from sinking in the harbor, it was towed westwards by a tugboat to where it is today, at an ideal depth of 30 meters for (advanced) divers.

Nothing remains of the ship’s cargo today. It was rescued (you could also say: looted) and drunk or worn by anyone who could get hold of it. Many inexperienced treasure divers had to pay for this with decompression sickness.

Today the wreck is exactly on the second mega pier, and can only be dived on when no cruise ships are docked.

The wreck is a beautiful artificial reef richly overgrown with various species of corals and sponges and attracts many fish such as tarpons, barracudas and mackerels, as well as much smaller marine life.

This trip is only suitable for divers with an Advanced certification or it can be done during an Advanced course. Usually we combine a dive on the Superior with the adjacent Double Reef, but we can also dive on the Superior twice, or only once. And for the real enthusiast there is also the specialty wreck diving.
